The Atlanta Police Foundation

To Make Atlanta the Safest Large City in the Nation

The Atlanta Police Foundation employs a broad array of 21st century public safety initiatives to accomplish its mission. These initiatives include community programs designed to provide resources to underserved neighborhoods, as well as training to cultivate a mindset of true servanthood among the Atlanta Police Department sworn personnel.

Since 2003, APF has been providing vital strategic support to Atlanta’s  Mayor, Chief of Police, and Police Department to ensure that our City’s law enforcement agency remains on the forefront of policing and public safety practices.  In 2015, Atlanta was named a model city by President Obama’s task force for 21st Century Policing – one of only 15 jurisdictions to be given that status out of 18,000 reviewed.

Our work is far from over. Through our public-private partnership model, we will continue to pursue, privately fund and implement programming that creates a safe and just city for every citizen of Atlanta, driving out crime and enhancing the safety of our neighborhoods.

The 8 Pillars of the APF

The foundation of our organization and its goals

Technology

APF employs its Operation Shield initiative to improve APD’s predictive policing ability and solve investigative cases.  Our latest Operation Shield program, Connect Atlanta, allows residents and business to register their private cameras so that APD can request footage from them should a crime occur in the area.

Increased Enforcement

Through training, collaboration, community policing and increased incentives, we will enhance the morale of APD and bring police visibility and engagement back to where it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Training

The largest portion of Public Safety First capital campaign will be devoted to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. The training center will be a best-in-class facility for APD and other law enforcement agencies to train in 21st Century Policing best practices as well as a gathering spot for community events and conversations.

More Officers

Focused efforts on both retention and recruitment will bring APD back up to their authorized complement of 2,046 officers. APD will hire 750 officers over the next three years to meet this mark by employing officer support incentives such as hiring, retention and in-city residency bonuses.

Community Policing

APF’s community policing mission is two-fold: to provide more police visibility for security in the neighborhoods we serve and to cultivate the highest level of community service in APD’s culture. The Secure Neighborhoods program embodies these values by providing officers with opportunities to move into the neighborhoods they serve.

Repeat Offenders

APF will continue to bring together APD, the Fulton County District Attorney’s office and Fulton County judges and others on the Atlanta Criminal Justice Commission to address Atlanta’s repeat offender issue.

Youth Engagement

APF will continue to expand its At-Promise youth initiative to divert Atlanta youth from crime to brighter pathways. The Foundation’s third location, the Truist Andrew and Walter Young Family At-Promise Center will open to youth and APF will seek to open a fourth center soon.

Regional Collaboration

APF will work with APD to ensure they continue critical collaboration and joint planning with county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. This will include joint training of agencies at the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Additionally, APF will continue to nurture partnerships between the public and private security directors through the Atlanta Security Council.
